24 years of experience as a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist who also provide psychotherapy to adults. Primarily trained as a psychodynamic psychotherapist in England, where I’ve worked for the NHS and Private Sector.
Born in Portugal and educated in England, where I’ve worked for the NHS and private sector. Studied until I was 16 in Portugal, having to spend the summer breaks in South Africa. Proceeded into higher education in the field of Psychotherapy. Relocated to Portugal in 2011.
I specialized in neurodevelopment disorders (Autism, ADHD and Learning Disabilities) with children and adolescents, I’ve worked in the NHS (as a Clinical Lead) as well in the private sector. I was responsible for creating the TaMHS project (Targetted Mental Health in Schools) for the NHS, CAMHS in North East London. I also work with issues such as depression, anxiety, OCD, relational and attachment issues, grief and loss, suicide ideation, relationship issues to relocation and cultural issues. At the moment I’m (Online) providing a specialized, cultural and adapted version of the TaMHS project in Sierra Leone. I also provide consultation in mental health for charities in England.
Present moment moment I’m a post- grad (MSc) student in Neuroscience at King’s College London (Institute for Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience).
For the last 3 years I have been on private practice, which will continue for at least another year. When helping parents with their children, I also work with the schools, so we can have a whole approach to therapy. Relocating to another country, with or without children may bring some settlement issues. When a family move abroad, or even in their own country, mental health or behavioural problems with children can be a huge stressor , which may easily lead to burnout, family conflict and even separation. In the era of the digital age, loneliness, problems at work or financial crisis might lead to mild to severe depressive symptoms, as well as suicide ideation.
One of the most precious valences regarding mental health, is the ability to have a knowledge in the biology of human behaviour and work towards a more adaptable capacity regarding relationships. Those relationships, being with ourselves, friends, partners, family, children and co- workers are essential towards a more balanced overall health. Independently of what one might be struggling at the moment, it is possible. It’s this relational approach to life which aids us in creating a secure base, where we can operate from. Mental health problems can be a true barrier, which is normal regarding what issues one might be passing through. It’s ok to be have problems, mental health issues. In that sense, I follow the British model of the NHS “I Thrive”. My Care Plans are made with the client and not for the client, so the client can have a therapeutic approach that he or she can cope with. That means that the client is 100% involved in their Care Plan.
So far, this is the most humanistic approach, and the one that works the better. Care plans can be changed at anytime according with the client’s needs and situation. I provide a caring environment where one feels safe, understood, non- judgmental and cared for.
Although I was foremost trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, I tend to use a more person- centered and scientific approach together with the client. Please feel free in contacting me at anytime.
I mix psychodynamic psychotherapy together with CBT and Applied Behaviour Analysis, providing a service which best suits the client. The aim is to gain or regain a balanced mental health to lead a better quality of life with youserlf, others and circumstances.
I work with children, adolescents families and adults. I’m in Lisbon, Portugal. Please take note that at the moment I’m only delivering my services Online. I deliver the sessions both in English and Portuguese.
Overall
Miguel has been an excellent therapist and has done a great deal to help me with my move to Portugal from the US. He provides an individualized treatment plan using CBT and psychodynamic therapy and I would recommend him to anyone, especially a person going through the expat experience in a new country.
Overall
Miguel is helping me modulate some core issues of my personality which I have struggled with for ages. I am very pleased with his support. He is professional, empathic, thoughtful, and fully engaged. What I mostly like about him is that he doesn't give standardized answers. He reflects on the discussion and provides insightful and thought-provoking answers and comments. Thank you, Miguel!
Overall
Easy to talk too.
